North American Aviation built 15,575 of these singleengine fighters during the 1940s. The P-51 Mustang had aerodynamics that gave it an advantage in combat. The Tuskegee Airmen, the famed World War II squadron composed entirely of African-American pilots, flew Mustangs. It was the only Army Air Force fighter group never to lose a bomber to enemy planes.
Over 3,700 P-51 Mustangs were produced during the war years. The P-51 was prototyped in October of 1940. The Mustang was built as a high speed fighter and was used early on as an escort plane for bombing raids in Europe. It also saw action in North Africa and against the V-1 rocket in Britain. Near the end of the war, the Mustang was used as a fighter escort to B-29 in raids against the Japanese main land.
