Annual event commemorates Feb 15, the day in 1942 when Singapore fell to the Japanese.
RETIREE Foo Wah Eng turned up at the War Memorial Park in Beach Road yesterday - the way he had done so every year for the last 42 years.
In keeping with his late mother's wish, Mr Foo, 69, is a familiar face at the War Memorial Service for civilian victims every Feb 15.The date marks the day Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942 and is also Total Defence Day.
Mr Foo and his brother, Wah Ann, 72, were among more than 900 people who attended the 43rd War Memorial Service for the civilian victims of the Japanese Occupation.
The event was organised by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and guests included members of the diplomatic corps here such as the Japanese, German and Chinese ambassadors. Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew was the guest of honour.
In a simple but sombre ceremony, representatives - including those from schools and religious organisations - took turns to lay wreaths at the foot of the 92.5m-high war memorial. Buglers from the Singapore Armed Forces played The Last Post - a bugle call typically played at military funerals and ceremonies commemorating those who have fallen in war. Bagpipers were also present.
